"On synchronization effect in sense-and-response systems"

haha, probably a good Ph.D topic or a Nature paper topic.
Here is an abstract... Probably I will never be able to finish the whole work in my Ph.D:( So anyone interested to work on it feel free to contact us for details:P

On synchronization effect in sense-and-response systems

Abstract:

Many complex systems can be modeled as sense-and-response systems (SARS). Some examples include Internet congestion control, stock market, and human-beings' life cycles. In a sense-and-response system, agents keep sensing the change of environment (including other agents' behaviors) and response to the change. Hence the whole system becomes a dynamic system with feedback and it is interesting to study its convergence and steady state properties.

In this paper / thesis, we study one fundamental phenomenon in such sense-and-response systems -- the synchronization effect. It is very common that agents in a sense-and-response system are synchronized in some manner, because the signals they detect are broadcasted in a shared media. We will show that such synchronization may have positive effect in some scenarios and have negative effect in other scenarios.

For example, machines connected the same Internet router may be synchronized by the packet loss or delay in the router. When one machine detects excessive packet loss as a signal of network congestion and reduce its sending rate, other machines probably detect the same signal and reduce their rates at the same time, such synchronization may introduce queue oscillation and under-utilization of the bottleneck router.
Similar effect happens in the area of investment where people are synchronized by the price changes and rush to invest in a few hot spots, resulting in a cycle of oscillating between over-investment and under-investment and waste of resources.

On the other hand, human-beings in a close area may be synchronized by the common smell or heat. Such synchronization may help to coordinate a group's schedule and improve working efficiency.

In this paper / thesis, we study the nature of such synchronization, its impact in different scenarios, and techniques to strengthen or weaken such synchronization.

approaching my 30s

read a link from hammer's blog that tests the psycho-age...
http://www.xlzx.com/xlcs/zy32.htm

http://astro.sina.com.cn/t/2004-12-15/14831.shtml

"Just believe"

"How?"
-"By believing, Peter... Just believe"
"I can see her."

With tears, I finished Finding Neverland. Thanks fuling for her strong recommendation last year. I really love this moive: from the music, to the script, and to James' belief in "believing".

Not sure why, I still like the Disney-like story, still like to go to Disney. Just like the feeling: Nothing is impossible in imagination. Let my imagination flying high in the sky, and get my strength to realize it one step after another.

Go back to Finding Neverland, it has more realities: the combination and sometimes the fighting of reality and believing.

When Sylvia's mom told James that he had brought enough trouble to this family, James had to go away and avoid the children reluctantly -- I understand -- he would not do anything if he found him bringing troubles to Sylvia's family. When Sylvia is seriously ill, he came back with the whole set of play, to fulfill his promise to Sylvia: bring her to Neverland. Though he could not prevent Sylvia's death, I do believe that Sylvia left the world happily -- she went to the Neverland. Her children, including the sad Peter, finally managed to go through their deep sorrow, by believing.

Yes, by believing, we can walk through all these difficulties, I believe. Just believe.

There can be miracles, when you believe
Though hope is frail, it's hard to kill
Who knows what miracles, you can achieve,
When you believe, somehow you will
You will when you believe

As a plus, I really like the dialogues in the movie. One example that impressed me was the old lady's words after the successful play. Her husband left. But she's still so optimistic of life -- yeah, why not? she is also a person that believes:)

E. Tsang
